Have you ever felt stuck in a routine, like your days are on repeat? It’s easy to get comfortable with the familiar, but where’s the fun in that? Life is bursting with opportunities to explore, grow, and surprise yourself—you just have to be willing to do something new. Whether it’s a small change in your daily routine or a bold leap into the unknown, embracing new things can transform your life in ways you never imagined.
Why Should You Do New Things?
- Expand Your World: It could be as simple as tasting a cuisine you’ve never tasted or as adventurous as traveling to a country where you don’t speak the language.
- Boost Your Confidence: There’s nothing quite like the feeling of mastering something new. Whether it’s nailing a new recipe or conquering your fear of public speaking, every small victory builds self-assurance and reminds you of what you’re capable of.
- Spark Creativity: When you step outside your usual patterns, you open yourself up to fresh ideas and inspiration. That pottery class you’ve been eyeing could unlock your inner artist.
- Build Resilience: Each time you venture into unfamiliar territory, you train yourself to handle uncertainty with grace and confidence.
How to Get Started
- Start Small: Begin with something manageable—take a new workout class, experiment with a different coffee order, or listen to a genre of music you’ve never explored.
- Bring a Friend Along: Everything feels less intimidating when you have someone by your side. Having a buddy can make the experience more fun and less scary.
- Embrace Curiosity Over Perfection: Don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. The goal isn’t to be perfect—it’s to learn, grow, and enjoy the process.
- Celebrate Every Win: Do something new and didn’t hate it? That’s a win! Celebrate those moments, they’re proof that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and into a world of possibility. And if you did hate it, you’ve learned something important about yourself.
Real-Life Adventures in Doing New Things
- Travel Off the Beaten Path: Maybe it’s finally booking that solo trip or visiting a city that’s not on every travel blog’s “must-see” list. Travel has a way of opening our minds and hearts in ways we never expect. Some of the riches experiences Neal and I shared were conversations in grocery stores across the world. It turns out that our foreign accents invite locals to visit with us!
- Learn Something New: Ever wanted to play guitar? Speak Italian? Bake sourdough bread? Picking up a new skill is both challenging and rewarding.
- Giving Back Through Volunteering: Volunteering introduces you to people from all walks of life while making a positive impact on your community.
I was a volunteer public speaker for decades. I volunteered at a hospice and at a natural history museum. The natural history museum was an attempt to learn a subject that I was terrible at in school. I learned enough about dinosaurs to teach classes to kids!
Overcome the Fear Factor
Let’s be honest, doing new things can feel scary! But fear is often just excitement in disguise. Here are some tips for tackling those nerves:
- Break It Down: Big goals can feel overwhelming, so break them into smaller steps. Want to run a marathon? Start with a 5K.
- Do Your Homework: Research can help ease anxiety. Watch videos, read reviews, or talk to others who’ve done what you’re about to do. Don’t “try” anything! To “try” means to never do it or to fail. So just “do”.
- Focus on Growth: Remember that every attempt, successful or not, is an opportunity to grow and learn.
The Magic of Saying “Yes”
The beauty of doing new things is that it opens doors you didn’t even know existed. Maybe saying “yes” to karaoke night leads to discovering your love for performing.
So, what are you waiting for? Sign up for that class, order something unfamiliar off the menu, or strike up a conversation with someone new. The world is full of possibilities just waiting for you to say “yes.”
